Free entry extended to waste centres for flood impacted Ipswich residents

Flood impacted residents and businesses can dispose of stinking and soggy waste for free for another week after council extended the free entry for Riverview and Rosewood Recycling and Refuse Centres until Sunday 13 March.

Additionally, Riverview Recycling and Refuse Centre will open an hour early at 7am Saturday 5 March and Sunday 6 March.

Local Disaster Management Group Chairperson Mayor Teresa Harding said council had listened to community calls and hoped extending free waste disposal for another week would relieve some stress for flood impacted residents.

“Council will continue to work with the community and identify where additional services may be of benefit as floodwaters continue to recede,” Mayor Harding said.

“Businesses and community organisations who have been flood affected can also request skip bins free of charge and delivered within 24-48 hours. To register for this service, call (07) 3810 6666.

“I would like to thank our community for helping each other, from family and friends to neighbours and strangers, through this flood disaster.

“We need to continue our strong community spirit as we progress with the recovery, which will evolve over the coming days, weeks and months.”

Free kerbside collection service targeting Ipswich’s most flood impacted streets and suburbs will also be expanded to cover almost a dozen suburbs.

“Our crews and contractors are working their way through flooded areas in Goodna, Bundamba, Karalee, North Booval, Barellan Point, Churchill, North Ipswich, East Ipswich, Moores Pocket, Tivoli and Brassall,” Mayor Harding said.

“Waste collection trucks will also move through remaining impacted suburbs over coming days and weeks.

“This collection service is specifically for flood damaged items and not part of council’s routine kerbside program, which will recommence once it is safe to do so.

“Industrial bins are now available as dedicated drop-off points for food waste collection in suburbs that have experienced power outages including Tivoli, Karalee, North Ipswich and Churchill.”

Council has arranged for access to any vehicle greater than 10 tonne GVM to go directly to Swanbank Landfill (Swanbank Road, Swanbank) and Ti-Tree Landfill (Champions Way, Willowbank). Please note this only applies to self-tipping vehicles (no flatbed trucks permitted).

Where possible, please dump putrescible (food) waste in closed red top domestic or industrial bins, or at a dedicated drop-off points:

Bremer Waters, 102A Moores Pocket Road, Tivoli

North Ipswich Sports Fields, The Terrace, North Ipswich

Exercise Park near Ludwig Lane – Corner Junction Road and Arthur Summerville Road, Karalee

Lobley Park – Warwick Road, Churchill

Plus points in East Ipswich, Bundamba, Leichhardt and One Mile.

Additional drop-off points will be identified over the coming days.

Council encourages businesses not to dump waste on the kerb or footpath, but to order a skip bin before dumping items.

Before you start cleaning up, call your insurer, take lots of photos and video of the damage and make a list of your items.

Further details of council waste services will be provided as they become available. If you live in an impacted area, please leave your rubbish bin on the kerbside. Council will endeavour to service your bin as resources become available.
