4. Platypus (e)DNA post-flood monitoring follow up

Resolution: Moved by Mayor Teresa Harding:

4. Platypus (e)DNA post-flood monitoring follow up

Platypus environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring has been conducted since 2016 in Ipswich’s waterways. Platypus eDNA monitoring results taken immediately after the 2021-2022 floods showed a severe reduction in the number of positive records, indicating the loss of, or reduced numbers of platypus in many waterways across Ipswich following the major events of February and May 2022. As per recommendations of the 2021-2022 monitoring report, a post flood follow up monitoring event was conducted again six (6) months later in December 2022. Results of the follow up monitoring are consistent with the findings of the previous monitoring event, indicating a marked loss of platypus in our waterways. Additional actions must be taken promptly to secure platypus populations in the region, to prevent local extinction.

RECOMMENDATION

Moved by Mayor Teresa Harding:

Seconded by Councillor Andrew Fechner:

That the report on Platypus (eDNA) post-flood monitoring follow up be received and noted.
